tizzy

this is the neighborhood that I am living in in Thailand. All the little neighborhoods are called 'soi's and they're definitely my favorite part about this city. Bangkok is so huge and busy, but living in a soi makes you feel like you're part of a smaller community where when you walk down the street you see people you recognize. Lining the streets are food vendors--- basically there's not much cooking done 'in' the houses (we don't even have a kitchen!) but the streets are filled with people selling anything from tea to fruit to full meals in a bag (rice plus meat or seafood, and veggies)

The water level is really high right now--- actually I think today is the highest day--- The place where we work has a boat ramp and so it connects right to the river and thus floods all the time! Yesterday the guys from the crew blew up an inflatable kayak and were kayaking people into work. The problem is the river water is pretty polluted (hence, our job) and so you've got to wash yourself off after every walk into or our of work or else your legs start to itch. (don't want to think about it too much)
HAHAHA--- i'm at work and i heard one of the guys who works here, Te (a little thai man) scream out "HANG ON AMY! I"LL COME TO SAVE YOU! WE"VE GOT THE BOAT!

Spent the weekend last weekend at the beach--- we got a little place (by little i mean that literally there was a bed and that's all that fit) on a pier by the water. Spent one day at the beach and one day tooling around the countryside.

Thailand is interesting-- There are a lot of things that I love about latin america here--- but there's also this really fascinating break between how the people are (calm, friendly, sweet) and the city (busy, trafficy, polluted, nuts)

this city has me all in a tizzy
